Every Canadian dog owner has likely peered outside on a January morning to see snow piled up, wind whipping around, ice coating the sidewalks and asked themselves: “Does my dog need a jacket? A sweater? A thermal onesie and boots?”
But winter isn’t the only reason pet parents might want to invest in an outfit (be it chic and fashion-forward, or practical) for their pups. Some dogs enjoy getting dressed up. For others, clothing can increase their comfort level, and certain dogs require specific clothing for health or weather-related situations.
Here’s everything you need to know about doggie fashion.
Some call it pumpkin spice season, others refer to it as sweater weather. However you describe fall, this time of year is likely to come with some cold days, some wet days, as well as some cold and wet days.
After a long, sunny summer, this transitional weather can bother certain breeds. Small dogs like chihuahuas, or dogs with fine, thin fur like greyhounds or whippets, may look at your own cashmere scarf-and-cardigan ensemble with some serious envy unless you get them a sweater or jacket too. (Tika The Iggy is one of our fave style advisors when it comes to knitwear.) Pet parents can also layer pieces for extra style points (and practically, it makes it easier to add or remove layers in changing weather).
Playing in the falling leaves is a lot more fun when you’re not shivering, so bring on the sweaters (for them) and pumpkin spice latte (for you).
Of course, style is also about having fun and if your dog is into dressing up and seems comfortable in clothing, then you don’t need a reason to style them in an adorable hoodie or celebrate the season with an amazing Halloween costume.
Maybe you have a pup with a penchant for designer labels (Fendi, Louis Vuitton, and Versace all have the canine market cornered) or perhaps you just want to up the cute factor by stepping out together in matching outfits.
We say go for it — as long as your dog agrees — because the internet is a big place and there’s always room for another doggie fashion influencer.
