Fall has officially arrived and with it, even more chances to explore pet style trends and choose the perfect outfit for your pup.
It’s also perfect timing to introduce you to our friend, Charles. He may only be 1.5’ tall, but as one of our in-house style mavens, he has great taste in style, be it sartorial elegance, cute-as-a-button, practical, or scary chic.
Charles, a middle-aged pug originally from Squamish, BC and now living in Mississauga, ON, met up with two of Pet Valu’s style experts, Liz Eeuwes and Dolly Kaushal, to talk about what’s in this fall.
“Liz and Dolly designed the Bailey & Bella line, so naturally they have impeccable taste,” Charles wrote to us in his pitch to get on the website with style advice. “Canadians looking to up their pet wardrobe HAVE to hear about this year’s fall must-haves, and I’ve gathered everything they need to know.
He made a strong case, so in the words of Charles (with some pointers from Liz and Dolly), here is everything you need to know about this fall’s style trends for dogs and cats.
Over to you, Charles. Tell us what you think Canadians need to know about what’s in this fall?
This year, we're seeing a lot of our puppies go cozy. “Pet Valu is launching colourful hoodies, puffer jackets and sweater vests. In addition to looking for items that appeal to your sense of style, you should also select pieces that are comfortable, functional and appropriate for your pet’s activity level.”
Dolly says this is going to feature prominently in the winter collection, in the coordinating pieces and accessories, as well as with outerwear.
I’m drooling over this news.
Am I dressed like my Devoted Pet Lover, or is my pet parent dressed like me? Let’s just say that sometimes it’s fun to be a walking “who wore it better” competition.
Pet Valu stocks items that allow this runway walk-off to take place on sidewalks all across Canada.
There will be a whole collection of pet parent accessories — matching hats and more. To be honest, I like to wear my socks with nothing but a collar and a smile.
Celebrated designer, William Morris, said that ‘nothing useless can be truly beautiful’, and while our family cat may disagree, as a dog, I like a bit of functionality in my wardrobe. Also, my butt gets cold.
It’s why I insist on adding to my collection of hoodies annually. A cozy hoody option from Pet Valu’s fall collection is excellent for cottage weekends.
“Our winter parkas are all water resistant as well,” adds Dolly. “We keep the pets' comfort in mind, and at the same time we're making things fashionable.”
I have one word: J’adore!
I have a canine fashionista friend who is an Afghan Hound. I, as mentioned earlier, am un petit pug. We cannot share clothing. We cannot even share accessories. We can, however, go on shopping dates together to pick up a pyjama onesie for me and a bandana for my leggier friend.
“A big part of Bailey & Bella is making sure that we're offering inclusivity across all breeds, shapes and sizes, and just how much or how little a pet would want to dress up,” Liz tells me.
I approve.
This year, Liz tells me to expect to see a “refresh on some of the classics.” Among Halloween-inspired accessories and whimsical pieces with dog-walking functionality built-in, they’ll offer complete costumes for that pup who’s just a little bit extra. Yes, there will be items for cats, too, who are a lot extra. And yes, many of the small dog outfits will fit cats, so if we must share, then so be it.
The costume everyone is buzzing about this year is this chic little bee number, which I’d wear any day of the year.
And for a classic look that celebrates the entire season, I’d advise opting for a plush pumpkin ensemble. Bring your own spice.
For my edgier fashion friends, this harness with wings will be sure to impress on a Halloween walk. Neighbourhood squirrels have no idea what they’re in for.
Finally, it’s accessories that make the outfit, not to mention that some doggos may be shy so accessories are just easier than full costumes. Pick up one of these trick-or-treat toys and not even the mail carrier will be able to resist giving you an extra cookie this year.
Who’s a good boy? Ahem, moi.
